Internship Opportunities



 ATTENTION Sophomores and Juniors:
 
The Introductory College Level Experience in Microbiology (iCLEM) program is an 8-week summer research internship program for exceptionally motivated high school sophomores and juniors with an interest in biotechnology. Applications for summer 2013 are now being accepted. The application deadline is March 1. Apply at http://qb3.berkeley.edu/synberc/iclem.html. Along with the application, a high school transcript and one teacher recommendation are required.

Description: iCLEM teaches basic molecular biology lab and research skills. Students work on a team-based bioenergy research project with four Ph.D. level scientists and two high school science teachers. In addition the program also exposes students to career exploration and preparation for the college admissions process, including field trips to a local biotech companies and colleges, career talks with scientists, guidance on writing a college statement of purpose, meetings with a college admissions and financial aid officers. Stipend is $1500, plus a $500 scholarship upon successful completion of the program.

Program info: iCLEM takes place at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (5885 Hollis, Emeryville) and runs from June 18 to August 8, 2013. Hours are Mon-Fri, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Students must commit to full-time work for all eight weeks of the program. The lab can be easily reached by public transit. Eligibility: Students must be sophomores or juniors currently enrolled in high school in Alameda, San Francisco or Contra Costa counties; must be US citizens or permanent residents; and must be at least 16 years of age by June 1, 2013 (no exceptions). Students' household incomes must be $60,000 or below. Students typically have taken Algebra 1 and biology. For questions, please contact Kate Spohr kspohr@berkeley.edu.
